Farmington was established by farm families that migrated from New York, and was in fact named after another town called Farmington New York. Civil War veterans populated the area, and soon Farmington was incorporated as a Dakota County municipal government in 1872.
The community remained a sort of sleepy, picturesque farm community until it experienced a population boom, and the US Census measured a head count that doubled between 1990 and 2000. Today, the population stands at about 20,000.
This rapidly growing community boasts a robust economy with a thriving business sector. In spite of the phenomenal growth, the community still boats a quality of life supported by quality schools, good public services, and a healthy environment for raising a family.
